Kwan Yin Invitational Tennis Tournament 2009

Grand Bahama Island – The 28th Annual Kwan Yin Invitational Tennis Tournament the largest and oldest local Annual Tennis event in Grand Bahama was held over this 2009 Emancipation Day Holiday weekend at the Kwan Yin Tennis Court in Freeport, from July 31st to August 3rd 2010.

In the open draw the Champion in the Men’s Singles division Derron Donaldson who defeated Ashwood Hall 6-3 to repeat as champion for the third straight year. The Ladies Singles Champion is Jessie Bastian who won when the injured Terah Smith could no longer continue and was forced to retire up 3-2 on serve when she fell and was lifted from the court. In the Mixed Doubles division David Thompson teamed up with Larricka Russell to defeat 7-5 Edwin Moss and Keva Palmer. The Men’s open Doubles was won by David Thompson and Derron Donaldson who dethroned last year’s champions Lee Gibbs and Rayon Higgs 6-4. 

In the Special Draw the Men’s Singles Champion is Larry Hall who won over Leroy Major 6-1 and the Men’s Doubles Special Draw was won by Tory Bartlett and Barry Smith as due to darkness the match could not be completed and Leroy major had to return to Nassau resulting in him and his partner Gary Davis losing by default  

This year the tournament honoured posthumously the late La’vaughn Munroe a regular participant and past champion who tragically passed away in a traffic fatality earlier this year. The Family of the late Great La’vaughn Munroe, founder of “Munroe’s Tennis Academy,” were on hand to receive a special award in appreciation of his contribution to the development and advancement of tennis nationally, internationally and locally especially his work with tennis junior players. 

The organizers of the 2009 Championships wish to thank the President of the Grand Bahama Port Authority limited Mr. Ian Rolle for acting as patron of the tournament and all tennis players, fans, supporters and families who came out and joined in the fun, games and fellowship in Celebration of Freedom this August Monday Emancipation Holiday Weekend 2009 in record numbers ensuring this was the best attended local tennis event ever.

Grand Bahama’s Rodney Carey Moves Closer to Singles Title

[BLTA] Two outstanding young Bahamian tennis players look to sweep the Boys singles title at the 2009 Barbados Junior International Tournament in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Tournament #1 seed Rodney Carey advances to the Boys 18 semi-final with a 61,62 victory over #7 seed Oliver Pramming-Benneweis (Denmark). Carey next plays Darian King (Barbados) in the Boys 18 semi-finals on Friday at 9:00am,

#2 seed doubles team of Carey and partner Nevy Jogi-Singh advanced to the Boys 18 Doubles Finals on Friday by defeating the team of Kevin Deligny/Dominic Lovell (St. Lucia) 76(4), 62 in the Semi-finals on Thursday. Carey and partner Singh will play the team of Darian King (Barbados)/Brandon Burke (Jamaica) #1 seeds on Friday to determine the Boys 18 Doubles Championship.

In the Boys 14 & Under Singles Semi-finals 12 year old Justin Roberts (Bahamas) defeated Shakir Elvin (Antigua) 60, 61 to advance to his first COTECC Boys 14 & Under Final. Roberts next plays Remario Francis (USA) on Friday at 9:00am to determine the 2009 Barbados Junior International Tournament Boys 14 & Under Singles Championship.

Roberts and partner Matthew Hutchinson played the Boys 14 & Under Doubles Finals on Thursday losing the the #1 seeded team of Jannick James (Granada)/Remario Francis 36, 57. Both set were keenly contested with Roberts and partner leveling the score at 5 all in the second set but was unable to hold serve and lost two consecutive game and the match.
